In a knowledge-based era, research is one of the most important sources of knowledge generation and occupies a critical position in promoting a nation’s prosperity and its citizens’ well-being. It provides insights and new ideas that enrich human understanding of various social, economic and cultural phenomenons, helps in solving practical problems and brings about material improvements via high-tech practices and products. Owing to its interdisciplinary realm embracing the disciplines of art, sociology, technology, economics, climatology and so on, research in architecture has to adopt methods and research designs which would be apt for the particular area of study. These methods therefore are also varied and adapted from various fields. Architectural research often culminates in value judgment and speculation, and diverts from the scientific way of investigation.
Universities, as centers of knowledge production and generation, play a critical role in the national research. Their role in building national research capacity is recently recognized and various initiatives have been taken at various levels to enhance university research, institutional measures to build research capacity. Considering the impact of these expectations on academics, many universities have changed their brief to include research and the production of knowledge as key to their institutional directions. As a result, university research has become highly competitive in a nation’s capacity to deliver knowledge in the world market. Given the prominent role it plays in the overall national research efforts, university research is an indicator of the performance and educational growth in various disciplines where architecture is no exception. This needs training to pursue architectural research that may lead to building research capacity amongst architectural fraternity as a whole.
Course objectives:
This course focuses on contemporary concerns and issues associated with research in architecture, both for architectural practice and academics.
It is intended to provide architects with concept /methods for research in architecture and to assist in contextualizing their research in terms of existing knowledge, and varieties of research strategies.
The programme provides a forum for the devising, development and refinement of a rigorous research methodology.
The focus of this training program is research design and methods in architecture.
Several related topics, which are of relevance to the teachers in particular owing to the mandate of a PhD for teachers, such as pursuing doctoral research, the UGC norms for doctoral research etc. would also be discussed.

NIASA was instituted in July 2005, as the first institute of architecture initiated jointly by the Council of Architecture (COA) and the Centre for Development Studies & Activities (CDSA). It is a national level institute of excellence that facilitates advanced research in the various fields of architecture, to teachers of architecture, professionals and individuals / students. For this NIASA is in talks with CDSA, recognised research center of Pune University, in offering Doctoral and Post-Doctoral level programs. NIASA is presently operating from the picturesque campus of CDSA, on the outskirts of Pune, Maharashtra, lovingly called the Oxford of the East.
Functions:
NIASA is set to grow in function and stature as per the growing demands of studies in architecture. At present, it operates functions in four different ways
1. Research in Architecture: The ever evolving faculty of architecture, in all its vastness, offers little scope of pursuing research at an advanced level, in India. NIASA hopes to supplement the need for providing a facility, at a national level, for such research.
2. Teacher's Training Program (TTP): Targeted at the 1200+ teachers of architecture in India, in a series of TTPs, made mandatory for teachers to attend at some time or another, aims at raising the standards of teaching architecture. New methods and techniques, pertinent subjects, both technical and theoretical, are to be covered over the weeks, in 5 day packages, that will bring the best presenters and the most applicable subjects from the length & breadth of the country.
3. Continuing Education Program (CEP): Similar in structure to TTPs, but targeted towards professionals in the field, involving new theories and practices, technical updating, etc.
4. Architecture Publishing Cell: To satiate the need for books and journals in architecture, that at present are too little to constructively involve architects and students in a continuing learning and updating process. COA is in the process of organizing such articles and start the cell at NIASA.
5. National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA): It is a national level online test with drawing exam, necessary for admission to 5 year B.Arch Courses at all unaided colleges in India. We hope that by the next academic year, aided colleges will also be accepting NATA scores for admission.
6. National Electronic Library Database: NIASA is in the process of collecting library information from all the various architectural colleges of India. This data will be organised and made available online to assist independent researchers, students, faculty and even professionals in finding out exactly where a particular subject may be accessed.
7. Upcoming Project: National Design Code a project of the COA that is to graphically offer design models, for various geographical and climatological complexities in India.
