Lime has been in use for more than 5000 years in India. Its use had been diverse, for structural purposes as well as for decorative purposes in past. Decorative niches or arches from the Rajasthani or Mughal Architecture stand as testimony to the use of lime. Various techniques were developed for the use of lime in buildings and many recipes were tried. The presence of lime in historic buildings across the country in various settings and climates is due to the easy availability of lime across the country. With the advent of cement concrete, lime has disappeared from the mainstream architecture. Hence, its presence in academics remained more as a material to be studied from the books.
The conservation movement is gathering momentum in India and numerous restoration works are coming up across the country. Simultaneously, the environmental crisis has compelled us to think about the sustainability of the materials, that we are using in constructions and conservation projects. It is also driving us to make judicious use of the available resources. As a primary requirement for the restoration works, Architects have started exploring the use traditional materials and techniques involving timber, lime, stones etc.. Persons in the building sphere are now drawing upon our traditional wisdom in this area.
This has led to the revival of the use of lime in building activities. Several architects, now realizing the potential and qualities of lime as a building material, would like to work with this traditional material, however, lack of adequate technical knowhow is holding them back from using it.
Therefore, this hands on workshop is being envisioned for the architects with the intention of driving away the taboo and encouraging the use of lime. Experts from the field will guide the participants about the use of lime in building activities. They will share with the participants the traditional recipes and technical know how about lime.
The workshop comprises of:
- Technical sessions in the studio
- Site sessions to give on hands on experience in lime, from its preparation to its application in buildings, together with the skilled craftsmen,
- Visit to projects in Mumbai will allow the participants to get an opportunity of involvement in ongoing ventures in decorative work in lime.
