‘THE HERITAGE OF MODERNITY’
Coordinator: Prof. Kiran Joshi,
Dean, Chitkara University School of Planning & Architecture, Chandigarh
Dates: 22nd to 26th March 2010
Venue : Chitkara Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture, Chandigarh
Last date for registration: 15th March 2010
PREAMBLE:
‘Modernization’ refers to a bundle of cultural, social and economic processes such as the formation and mobilization of resources, the increase in forces of production and productivity of labour, of urban forms of life, and the secularization of values and norms. In the context of India and similar former European colonies, the process may also include various modes of interchange with the West and the formation of national identities. The resultant expression of modernization on the built environment can be seen, among others, in the emergence of vast industrial complexes, new modes of transport and communication; the metropolis, mass housing, social infrastructure, new building materials and technologies, and a minimalist aesthetic idiom. Though UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre and other similar organizations have been strongly advocating conservation of key expressions of our ‘Heritage of Modernity’ the category continues to be at tremendous risk on account of a low degree of awareness, little or no effort at identification, negligible protection and absence of appropriate conservation technology. The issue is being addressed in international forums, and has given rise to several notable modifications to existing theories and practices of heritage management. However, as much of this is not yet common knowledge, developmental works in India often cause inadvertent destruction of irreplaceable resources.
OBJECTIVE, SCOPE & METHODOLOGY :
The objective of this 5-day programme is to:
· understand the notion and categories of ‘The Heritage of Modernity’,
· impart knowledge of recent advances in identification, protection and management of heritage resources around the world,
· analyze the current status of such heritage resources in India.
While participants would be exposed to a general, comprehensive meaning of modernity, more emphasis will be laid on built expressions of the Colonial, the Industrial and the Modernist processes in India. Integrating well-illustrated lectures with visits to Heritage Sites of Modern, Industrial and Colonial Heritage in Chandigarh & Shimla, the programme seeks to promote sound judgment and practice for meaningful inclusion of such heritage resources into contemporary and future development plans.
THE VENUE:
Chandigarh- with its iconic modernist plan and architecture, is a living laboratory for examining various issues of management of Modernist Heritage. An equally significant advantage is the proximity of the Kalka-Shimla Railway World Heritage Site.
Shimla- the erstwhile British Summer Capital, several structures of which are undergoing conservation action.
